Bridgwater Under 11 and 13s Tournament

18th March

There were mixed fortunes for Bridgwater’s youngsters this weekend when both the U11 and U13 played in end of season tournaments in Wells. Braving the fierce wind, both teams worked very hard to show off the skills they had been practising over the year.

The under 11 side which consisted of Sean and Liam Hedaux, Duncan Morrish, Luke Reynolds ,Millie Burridge and Luke Shaw won their competition in style, beating teams from Shepton , Cheddar and Bruton, but drawing with Yeovil, who scored a last minute equalizer to spoil Bridgwater’s chances of a clean sweep.

The team was ably supported by Ben Pople who unfortunately could not play due to injury.

The U13 side faced stiff opposition from Wells, Cheddar, and Bruton who all beat the Bridgwater side. They finished on a high however, beating Taunton Civil Service 2-0. The U13 players were Tom Lott, Brandon Durkin, Harry Stephenson, Lucy Burridge, Megan Marden, Emma Hill and Kayleigh Edwards. The team goalkeeper Jay Owens, had only turned up to watch and found himself playing an active role in the competition. Jay, who had never played in goal in a hockey match before, played superbly, stopping many fine shots on goal.

Bridgwater U11’s and U13’s were involved in SASP organized tournaments in Taunton at the weekend. The U13’s entered one team and the U11’s put out two teams against other clubs in Somerset.

In their group games the U13’s finished first having won one and drawn two of their matches. They then came second in the next stage where they were then required to play off against Yeovil and Sherborne for third and fourth places. They unfortunately lost 2-0 to Yeovil, and therefore finished a creditable fourth out of eleven teams.

The U13 squad consisted of Holly Butterfield, Kate Reynolds, Kira Gardner, Tom Lott, Lucy Burridge, Harry Stevenson, Emma Hill, Kayleigh Edwards and Brandon Durkin.

Across town at Taunton Vale Hockey Club, the U11’s played in two leagues of four. Bridgwater A finished second in their group narrowly being beaten by Cheddar, who were the group winners. This meant that Bridgwater A would have to play aginst Yeovil and Sherborne in the semi final. The B team meanwhile finished third in their group, missing out on a chance for a semi final place.

The Yeovil game was very tight with Bridgwater scoring first. With two minutes to go Yeovil equalized meaning the game went into extra time. With it still all square at the end of full time the teams had to battle it out with a “ one on one “ with the keeper scenario.

As Bridgwater had no keeper, Liam Hedaux was elected as the defender and he managed to thwart two attempts by the Yeovil team. This meant that Hedaux himself needed to score to put Bridgwater into the final. This he did with great celebration by the rest of the squad.

In the final against Cheddar, again the game had to go into extra time with Liam Hedaux scoring the goal that made Bridgwater the tournament winners.
